This is part of the Iowa Innovation, Business, and Law Center's Fall 2022 Speaker Series, From Antiquities to Warhol: Exploring the Intersection of Art and Law.

With an illustrated lecture, Holmes will share an overview of the day to day legal issues that arise in the General Counsel's office of a major art museum.
 

Nicholas S. Holmes, General Counsel, Whitney Museum of American Art. Mr. Holmes is responsible for advising the Board of Trustees, the Director, and various Museum departments on a range of legal and policy matters, compliance issues, tax questions and intellectual property issues. Prior to joining the Museum in 2003, Mr. Holmes was an Associate with the law firm Goodwin Procter, LLP. His past experience includes work in the Counsel's Office of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and work as Andrew W. Mellon Intern and Exhibition Design Assistant at the Michael C Carlos Museum at Emory University.  He also served as a Curatorial Assistant at the National Academy of Design.

Mr. Holmes holds a JD from the University of Michigan Law School, and a BA from Emory University with High Honors in Art History. Mr. Holmes serves as Faculty Co-Chair of The Smithsonian Institution's Legal Issues in Museum Administrationconference, which is co-sponsored with the American Law Institute. He has taught courses in museum law at the graduate level and has lectured at New York University Law School and Fordham Law School, among others. He also served on the Board of Governors of Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills Michigan.
