Professor Rantanen specializes in Intellectual Property Law. He teaches the Introduction to Intellectual Property, Patent Law, and Trademarks & Unfair Competition courses. He also runs a group tutorial in which students discuss recent developments in patent law, a subject that is closely linked to his work on the nation’s leading patent law blog, PatentlyO. His scholarly research focuses on patent law theory and doctrine, and he frequently conducts empirical research to illuminate particular issues in patent law. In addition to his teaching and scholarship work, Professor Rantanen is the faculty advisor for the Iowa Intellectual Property Law Society student group, chairs the law school's judicial clerkship committee, and serves on multiple university committees and teams, particularly those related to technology and innovation.
