Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS): The Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) offers a forum for the exploration of traditional areas of intellectual property law comprising patent, trademark, and copyright law as well as other related areas such as antitrust and entertainment law. In recent years, this aspect of the University of Iowa College of Law curriculum has developed significantly and has attracted increasing interest from both students and prospective employers. Examples of typical IPLS events include: a guidance-and-information meeting to help prepare students for the Loyola Patent Law Interview Program, a panel discussion on trademark licensing with attorneys from the University of Iowa, and a lecture on copyrights and comics by the Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs for DC Entertainment.
In addition, IPLS co-hosts many of the speakers sponsored by the IBL. Recent co-hosted visiting speakers have included Hank Greely of Stanford Law School and Matthew Sag of Loyola-Chicago Law School, judges William C. Bryson and Kathleen M. O'Malley of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and Stephen Baird, Iowa JD ’90 of Winthrop & Weinstein, P.A. and co-author of DuetsBlog and Rudy Telscher '90, of Harness Dickey P.L.C. and lead counsel for Octane Fitness in Octane Fitness LLC v. Icon Health and Fitness, Inc. (2014). This relationship has permitted enhanced student engagement with these visitors.
IPLS also offers a mentoring program where upper-level students provide first-year students with advice regarding the practice of intellectual property law, the nature of the job market, and course planning. Over the past few years, IPLS members have accepted employment in IP law in both Iowa and throughout the country, including in Iowa City, Quad Cities, Des Moines, Madison, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and the Bay Area.
The officers and faculty advisors encourage any member of the University student body who is interested in the practice of intellectual property law or wants to learn more about the field in general to contact the officers directly or attend an IPLS meeting. Officers for the 2016-17 academic year are:
- President: Brianna Chamberlin
- Vice Presidents: Sarah Dickhut and Tyler Latcham
- Treasurer: Sarah Jack
- Event Coordinator: Megan Hingtgen
- Public Relations: Lauren Taylor
