The Abraham Accords, a set of normalization agreements entered into in late 2020 by Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco, are reshaping the economy of the Middle East. Commercial disputes will inevitably arise in connection with the new economic ties emerging from the Abraham Accords and are expected to overwhelmingly be resolved through international arbitration. This program will provide an introduction to the dispute-resolution issues that will define this emerging space with a focus on the characteristics of the national legal systems of the Abraham Accords nations, including the relevant arbitration laws, procedures, and institutional rules. The discussion will illuminate important characteristics of international arbitration that will be important to any lawyer expecting to advise clients or represent parties to disputes in this new environment.
There will be a 60-minute panel discussion followed by 30 minutes of Q & A. We encourage participants to submit questions to the moderator via the Zoom chat. To ensure the smoothest facilitation, the moderator will select questions and invite the panelists to respond.

Professor Maya Steinitz, University of Iowa College of Law (Moderator)
Professor Steinitz is the Charles E. Floete Professor of Law at the University of Iowa where she teaches international arbitration and international business transactions. She regularly serves as chair, panelist, and solo arbitrator in international commercial arbitration as well as counsel, consultant and expert witness in international and domestic arbitration matters. Professor Jacomijn van Haersolte-van Hof, London Court of International Arbitration
Professor van Haersolte-van Hof has been the Director General of the LCIA since 2014. Previously, she practised as counsel and arbitrator in The Hague, at her GAR 100 boutique HaersolteHof, which she set up after three years as counsel in the international arbitration group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Gary Born is Chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and the world’s pre-eminent authority on international commercial arbitration and international litigation. Arif Hyder Ali, Dechert LLP (Washington DC and London)
Arif Hyder Ali is the Co-Chair of Dechert LLP’s International Arbitration and Public International Law Group. For over 30 years, he has served as lead trial counsel and arbitrator (sole, party-appointed and chairperson) in arbitrations under the rules of all of the major arbitral regimes, the laws of over 50 jurisdictions, international law and Shari’a law. Mr. Ali has also been decorated by the King of Bahrain with the Order of Bahrain for his representation of Bahrain before the International Court of Justice.
