I am delighted to share the news that the Iowa patent moot court team of Josh Galgano and Michelle Wallace have won the national AIPLA Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Patent Law Moot Court competition! Michelle and Josh competed against a team from Suffolk in the final round, and also succeeded teams from Columbia, University of Washington, University of Utah, University of Houston, Michigan State, and others in the national rounds, as well as winning the Midwest regional competition in Chicago earlier this academic year.
The national competition was a great experience for our team. They argued in front of several PTAB judges in the earlier rounds, and then argued the final round in front of Federal Circuit Judges Chen, Lourie, and Tarranto. The competition was held in the beautiful courtrooms of the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, next to the White House. My colleague Jason Rantanen blogged about the win on the Patently-O website.
I want to give special thanks to those of you who helped our Patent, Copyright, Trademark, or IP Transactional teams this year, as well as those of you who have participated in the past.
More importantly, aside from the competition victories, our program provides an opportunity for Iowa law students to transition to practice by applying the law they have learned and challenging themselves to do the very best work they can do.
